Adobe InDesign

Today in class we utilized Adobe InDesign to layout our two page spread. I really like the software and I think the layout is very easy to use; everything is pretty self-explanatory. I felt very comfortable using the software and I will definitely utilize it to make revisions on my magazine.

Audience Engagement- Teen Vogue

Teen Vogue is similar to my magazine Antonious because they are both teen magazines. Teen Vogue's main target audience is primarily women ages 18-24 who are twice as likely "to reach fashion/beauty influentials", similar to Antonious, whose focus is mainly on teen fashion. 



Because Teen Vogue is now an online magazine, when visiting their website, an immediate popup ad asks members subscribe to their website with their email to get daily reminders. Teen Vogue is owned by 

Condé Nast is a well known, luxurious agency who also owns Vogue. They are well renowned and may not need as much advertising as a new magazine because they have such a big name already. 




Condé Nast, who uses "video, social, web, events, print—all fueled by data" to advertise their products. For example, the Teen Vogue YouTube channel has 1.6 million subscribers; their most viewed video is "Riverdale Cast Plays Truth or Dare" at over 22 million views. Teen Vogue chose to do a video on Riverdale because it is an incredibly popular show among teens- perfect for their target audience. 

For my magazine, I would use video, web, events, print, radio and social media to advertise. For example, I would use Spotify ads, Instagram ads, and YouTube ads along with Antonious accounts on each of those platforms to connect with my audience. Antious would have public playlists on Spotify, an account on Instagram, and an account on YouTube. 

My Target Audience

My target audience is primarily teen girls, ages 12-20, living in the North American and European regions. Because of their age, they most likely do not have a higher education, but they could potentially be in any social class. The target income would be any range of class, but primarily middle class, seeing as that is the majority of Americans and Europeans. Because the magazine is about student life and fads, it would spark interest in young girls invested in pop-culture. The photography and the relatability of the topics covered would keep the audience invested.

Feedback and Revisions

Most of the feedback I received from revisions was positive; everyone really liked my first table of contents page (also my favorite page of my magazine) and my use of cutting people out of images to place them in boxes was also well received. I am surprised that my last page is acceptable, I thought it would be too short, but my teacher says it is fine.

However, the constructive feedback was mainly that I needed to add length to the first page of the article spread, which I agree with. After seeing what everyone else has done on their magazine, I realize that I need to add more words. I also need to make the background pages of my article white to make it less costly to print. The last critique I received was that I need to clarify the background of my pages, which I also agree with, but I need to learn how to do it.

Despite there being no page limit, my teacher says that I need to remove one of my table of contents pages to keep the page number down to four, so I guess I will take out the second table of contents page. On my cover page, I am going to change it so the photo retains its original background; it will no longer be a cutout of my friend, Alexa. I am also going to reedit the other cutouts in my magazine to clarify their outline, and I may re-shoot the skate park images with a better camera.

Use of Conventions

The magazine that I made was not perfect by any means, but it is pretty original. My magazine is a teen fashion and lifestyle magazine, similar to Teen Vogue. However, my magazine differs in content and look. In Teen Vogue the photographs are mostly editorial, like the real Vogue, and the content revolves much more around beauty than mine. My magazine also is more about student life than Teen Vogue’s is; I have articles on study habits and student life. However, my cover photo is editorial, but my other photos are not. Like most of the other magazines I reviewed, I kept a consistent color theme of pink.

Because of the nature of my magazine's genre, I do not address any real social issues, but I do incorporate many different teen cultures; I include study, goth, trendy, and editorial culture. I tried to be as diverse as possible in terms of the topics. However, I could not make the magazine intentionally racially diverse because I only asked my immediate friend group to be my models. It just so happened that one of my models is black and another has some Native American descent. Overall, my magazine has a good representation of different people and social groups.
